Translated by Lordbordem for the DDDFanclub

It was the most dramatic variety show scenes I’ve seen in the last several years. Gil, who got involved in a big incident, had completed his period of self-reflection and was returning to the world of TV through “Show Me The Money 5.” It was a nerve wracking moment and present at the same place was his brother like colleague, Jung Jun Ha, participating in the day’s events in his pursuits to learn how to rap. Standing in the distance was the person responsible for dragging Jung Jun Ha to “Show 5,” Haha. He stood anxiously watching both Gil’s return and Jung Jun Ha’s attempt.
Gil plays back that scene multiple times in his head. “What do I do if I have to judge him. I absolutely must not cry.”

Luckily he didn’t have to judge him. However when it was Jung Jun Ha’s turn to demonstrate his rapping skills, Gil couldn’t help but be completely focused on what was happening. Then he stopped his own judging briefly. He walked, for what seemed liked ages, and approached Jung Jun Ha. The moment Gil caught sight of him, all the tears he had held back burst out. It didn’t even take a second. The Infinity Challenge staff on site also cried, Haha cried and Jung Jun Ha also cried. Now there was these two massive guys hugging each other, crying like little kids. A heartwarming scene made even more significant as it was by chance that they met again rather than a prepared event.

Thus, Gil had miraculous returned to the Hip Hop scene, his first home. He may deny being called the “Godfather of Hip Hop” but he knew, given his love of Hip Hop, that if he had to make to return to TV then it would have to be through “Show Me the Money.” It was also the Infinity Challenge members that recommended that he return through “Show Me the Money.” They gave him strength by telling him “We really hope that you appear on this year’s Show Me The Money.”

Gil avoided any discussions about Infinity Challenge for 2 years, as he believed it would just cause them problems. He even avoided meeting the members. However Gil and Infinity Challenge were intimately linked to each by the chains of fate. That’s why, for Gil, Infinity Challenge is his 2nd home. He hates having to talk about Infinity Challenge because he doesn’t want to cause the team any trouble but I wanted to carefully ask him “What does Infinity Challenge mean for Gil?”

The tipsy interview started at 2PM but it was well past 6PM when we finished. We both finished 5 bottles of soju, starting our discussions with music before ending with Infinity Challenge. The plan was to hold the interview after a trip to the mountains but that wasn’t possible due to the rains. Instead, we at least tried to imitate the mood by going to a Camping-Style bar in Hongdae. Then a day passed and when I woke up in the morning, I got a message from Gil. “Thinking about it again, it really is quite difficult to talk about Infinity Challenge. Might be a better idea to not write about it if possible.”
Gil, Verbal Jint and Lee Hi’s new single “Refrigerator” will be released on May 28th at Midnight.

▶Music Talk

-You got a new single“Refrigerator” being released soon
"Lee Hi will be featuring on the single even though, from what I know, YG tends to not often do featuring works with other companies. I had already finished recording with Verbal Jint and a lot of discussions had already taken place when Lee Hi suddenly came to mind. I really liked Lee Hi’s “Breath.” Personally, I don’t think it’s the type of voice you can get from a 96-er. I thought, it would be great to record something with this kid that was completely different to her usual style. I’m practically godbrothers with Tablo and we were talking about various things when he said “Why don’t you talk ask Hyun Suk (YG CEO).” This is how it began. Lee Hi must have heard about this and went straight to Hyun Suk to ask him about it. Lee Hi said that this is her first time doing featuring work. She is really good at singing, I was shocked. It’s the first time since I met Jung In that I felt that sort of emotions. I even told her that she should perform in the overseas market.

-How did you end up producing a new song with Verbal Jint?
"What’s funny is that I met Verbal Jint for the first time last year. I actually also happen to be friends with Rhymer (Verbal Jint’s friend) but strangely enough, we just never had a chance to meet before. The two of us were having a drink when we just decided to give it a shot. He told me that this was the first time in 5~6 years that he had worked on lyrics this feverishly.

-Gil, Verbal Jint and Lee Hi. It’s quite an interesting group
"We ended up with a style that is slightly different to our usual stuff. It’s fluffy yet funny. Just having the three of us sing together is funny. It also feels like a follow up to “Turned off the TV.” A couple gets into a fight, they both want to reconcile but it isn’t going well. So they look at the food in the fridge, where there is still traces of their relationship left. As an example, they would look at the Kimchi friend rice and grumble to themselves. It’s quite interesting. Verbal Jint and Lee Hi also think that is a new challenge for them, which is why they decided work together."

-Where do you think it will land in the music ranks?
"It would be great if it can hold 5th place for 4 weeks. It would be a lie if I said that I absolutely don’t care about the rankings. I try not to profusely worry about it. I think I’m now at the age and experience now where I can do the things that I want to do"

-You’ve formed a new label called “Magic Mansion”
"It’s a producer company. I started picking out people for it 2 years ago. I plan to start producing in earnest. Our country has a great amount of energy within Asia right. Our musicians are also well recognised and have a lot of opportunities for work. However our working environment is poor. I alone must have personally sent away 1000 or so talented people. You would work on a song or two, then you would get married and give up on music. That’s because you can’t make a living through music. It’s because of the current system, from the copyright system and up. That’s why I thought about making my own crew. We get a lot of job requests so we just had to make a team. Starting last year, I held auditions and also gave them some jobs, now I have gathered 5 people. I’m still gathering more people. There is a person that just writes lyrics, another that writes out rhythms and there is also a programmer. We started in January but now we are crazy about work. I have to lock us out from the outside, haha.

-You seem fairly busy lately. You look like you are happy.
"I really like working with music. I began to love it even more through “Show Me the Money.” In the past, there was a period where I was sick of making music. I think that was the period when I was growing weary of music. However after the incident, I’ve been completely immersed in music alone. I began to think that I had been neglecting such a fun part of my life because I was too busy for it."

▶”Show Me The Money” talk

-They played the song from the movie “The Godfather” during your first scene.
"I was talking about this and that with Mad Clown when we decided upon that song. Originally we were even thinking of using “Gangsters Paradise.” I’m definitely not trying to imply that I’m the godfather of Hip Hop, that song just happened to come to mind when we were looking for a sad hip hop song that featured a grand orchestra in it. But then they included the “Hip Hop godfather.” subtitle to it. I told them to remove it, it’s not like I am some sort of godfather. But (Kim) Jin Pyo also told me that keeping it would be interesting so we just left it. Dok2 kept teasing me about it, “You picked that right? Well you are a godfather but isn’t it a bit funny to call yourself that?” haha.”

-You introduce yourself as Gil, the Hip Hop producer. Is Hip Hop Gil’s style of music?
"I think it’s within the scope of black music. To be more exact, it’s an expression of boom bap. When we talk about genre, I could try act all smart and say “It was all derived from jazz” but musicians lately hate childishly adding on extra tidbits like that. We just say that we work on music that we love and music that represents what we are."

-What was the reason for picking “Show Me the Money”
"Actually, this is something that has been in discussion since 5 years back. But the circumstances didn’t allow for it. I also had my doubts. If I was to be on the show, what could I actually do there? I even wondered if I would even be interesting at all. But, starting this year, the people around me kept insisting that I absolutely should start TV work again. The Infinity Challenge members recommended “Show Me the Money.” This was way before Haha was acting like a little devil in Jun Ha’s side. I made up my mind since the members recommended it. But it appeared that the God Of Variety was giving me a helping hand, suddenly Haha managed to lure Jun Ha here and we ended up with this scene. "

-You nearly ended up being the judge for Jung Jun Ha
"Judging is luck of the draw. However he ended up being paired with Simon.D. I also ran the simulations in my mind. “I absolutely must not cry” is what I thought. However on that day, I started to feel weird. On the day that the episode of Infinity Challenge aired, I was in the U.S. I was about to go to sleep when I kept getting calls and messages. It was all about Infinity Challenge. They said they cried their eyes out. How it was sad and touching. Eventually I went to a place with Wifi and looked it up with my manager. At the time, we also both cried."

-Weren’t you still meeting with Jung Jun Ha?
"I had not seen Jun Ha for around a year. However he would still send over a box of stew and noodles. He took great care of me, something I feel apologetic about. I haven’t seen the incident with Hong Chul. It felt like everything was my fault and I started to feel remorseful having hurt the people that I love. Because of this, I just couldn’t see them again. I got scolded because I ended up not seeing them often. Myung Soo was the one that scolded me the most. He lives in front of me and he would call me, telling me to come over for meals and to have a drink since I wouldn’t leave the house. But strangely, it wasn’t something I could do so easily. I was really embarrassed. I had committed this absolutely ridiculously blunder and then even the youngest member did the same thing. Hong Chul tells me that it was his own fault but as his older colleague, I am too ashamed to show myself in front of my junior."

Posted Image

-You hugged Jung Jun Ha and cried your eyes out. How were you feeling at the time?
"I was really embarrased. There was a lot of people and a ton of cameras as well and yet everyone’s focus on just that. But then I heard this huge sound from the side. I was also judging at the time so I couldn’t go over and see so I could only ask the PD about it. They told me that I can go over and watch. Still I didn’t go over there. But this time the person that I was judging told me to go over there and watch him. I walked for what seemed like ages, then when I saw his face I suddenly started tearing up. I can’t really describe it in words. I can’t describe it through song either. I must have just really missed him. Also the Infinity Challenge staff were there as well. It was the first time in around 3 years that I had seen them. The guy that takes photos, lighting team, audio team, assistant producer, writers, they are all one team. I also saw the writers, that I know, running away in tears while avoiding the cameras. It made me tear up."

-What was the reason for going back to variety shows
"Rather than variety shows in general, I just really wanted to be on “Show Me the Money.” “Show Me the Money” is an absolutely great program for people from our country that perform hip hop. They say that the editing distorts the truth and what not but I believe it is more important to find those hidden underground talents, make them known and give them the opportunity to continue working with music. “Infinity Challenge” is my 2nd home but my original home was Hip Hop. Going back home to start again also has significance to me. Frankly, it’s fun. It’s fun working with the young guns and making something with them.”

Posted Image

-The recordings are now at around the halfway mark, do you think you made the right decision.
"I believe it was 200% the correct decision. It is extremely fun. They say that this is the first time that the producers have been this close to each other. It’s also fun working with Mad Clown. I heard that common ground between the two of us was Comedian Kim Giri. After I heard that Mad was close with Giri, I told Giri that I was going to be on Show Me the Money with Mad and if you could perhaps create an opportunity for us to meet beforehand. So he invited us to his house. It was hilarious, he made us egg omelets then we ate and had some drinks."

-During the judging, you even had a participant point a model gun at you.
"That was extremely offensive. I wondered if I should correct their character. I told them that this wasn’t right. It would have been fine if they just pointed it at me but in the end he shot the gun as well. When he pointed the gun at me, I told them instead to “Please be good at rapping.”

-Some say it’s just regurgitating the same thing over and over again. Some call it the “Show Me the Money’ exams.
"I hope that the underground rappers become well known but we need to consider the big picture in our country. Guys like BewhY, C jamm, Sharp Gun are supposedly famous but you don’t really know about them right? People ask why people from the overground are participating but I believe that they need to participate because they are good. As long as they upgrade themselves before they participate."

-There was also some trouble because you judged them multiple times
"Personally, I went through C Jamm’s audition 4 times. That’s the producer’s style. Simon D also asked Jun Ha, if he had anything else to show. Me and The Quiett were responsible for eliminating the most amount of people. It’s because we asked them to repeat two or three times. We need to at least figure out how good their technique was. No way you can tell that after listening to them just once. That’s why there was a lot of people that got eliminated because they did well in their first try but did poorly on their 2nd try.

-The Quiett said they could tell after just 5 seconds
"That is also true. You can also tell after just 5 seconds. Frankly, you could even tell just from “Yo!” whether they are good and got the right attitude. I can tell after hearing the first few words of the lyrics and how they rhythm. I’m just making sure just in case. Jun Ha as well, if he gone once more with something else then you never know what may have happened. But I probably would have done the same thing, “Have anything else? That’s it? Eliminated” like that.

▶'Infinity Challenge'

-What does Infinity Challenge mean for Gil?
"They’re a family. I’ve spent a great deal of time with them. We went through troubles, anguish and hardships together. They are even closer than family. I saw them everyday and so we’ve been through thick and thin together, that’s why we became a family. I have a lot of love for them since we are one family. Seriously in the past, I would come home, collapse then go see Myung Soo before going to sleep. Then when I woke up, I would go see Myung Soo, come back home, see Myung Soo again and that kept going on. But talking about Infinity Challenge is really quite difficult since I’m not actually working with Infinity Challenge.

-Do you miss those days.
"It would be a lie if I said I didn’t miss it. Memories are what people live for. Memories are how I look towards the future. That’s why we take photos. To look back on those moments. Recently I learned how to use hashtags on Instagram thanks to Lee Hi. There was a whole bunch of “Infinity Challenge” photos. When I saw them, I thought to myself “Yeah we did that in those days, that’s right, we suffered so much then.”

-In that case….
"Do I want to go back to those days? I believe that my wishes and willpower have no bearing on that matter. It’s something that Infinity Challenge members and even all of the staff members have no decision making power over. That’s because Infinity Challenge is in the ownership of the viewers. It’s something that is tough for me to talk about and I don’t think I have anything I could say about it. The longing I have for Infinity Challenge is mine and mine alone. While all the members might also be of the same mind in regards to whether I want to return or not but that is not a decision we can make. I loved the Infinity Challenge more than anybody else and I was happy. I miss it a lot but talking about a return is something I can’t bring up and not something that should be brought up. I have caused a great deal of hurt to my Infinity Challenge family. Just talking about Infinity Challenge right now makes me feel really guilty.

-Did you meet up with your colleagues after the incident?
"The majority of my friends are people from the entertainment industry. Having worked in music for 20 years, the people that worked in the music industry happen to be my friends. After the incident, I pretty much avoided them. But a lot of people came looking for me. I moved houses but my mother got calls from the security office of my old apartment. They told her that a celebrity had come over and left a box of apples. We went to pick up the apples and found out that K.Will had sent it. So I met up with him and had a drink. (Yoon) Do Hyun came to my house the day after the incident, along with (Kim) Jae Dong. He scolded me a lot but what he actually meant was “It must be really tough on you if you were alone.” Still, I didn’t meet them after this, both of them. I also got a message from Shin Seung Hoon. He told me he was in the area. I didn’t reply back to him. But then soon after I got a message that said he was here. How could I not reply to him then? He’s not usually the sort of person that walks around in shorts but here he was in shorts and slippers. He told me that “I wanted to see you.”

-You’ve now each created your own label (Gil, Gary). Some say that LeeSsang is now going their own ways.
"Well first off, I’ve worked with Gary for 20 years. We’ve worked as a team for 15 years. If I was to rank the people that I was most sorry towards after the incident, 1st would be my mum, then it would be Gary, then my employees and then Infinity Challenge. Gary is part of my family. Also we are linked together in everything, from our building to our shop. Gary is someone that I understand very well, more so than my own sister and mother. Of course there are also times when I hate him. But once you spend 20 years together, that sort of thing tends to lose all meaning. No matter what path Gary decides to take, I will bless him. LeeSsang will just keep on going. On and on, since we are family. "

I welled up with emotions even though it was just a text interview. I couldn't help but feel sad at the extent of walling himself from even close friends because of his guilt. Nevertheless, such a sincere reflection would definitely make him wiser and hopefully others who had made mistakes like him would have the same humble attitude towards self-reflection.

I agree that IC is in the ownership of its many often overly critical viewers. As much as I hope to see Gil back in IC, I respect his wishes and that he will find joy in whatever he does.

Thanks LB. This interview changed my opion about Gil. I was convinced that he had no desire to return, and it seems others felt the same. Whenever the topic of the return of former members came up, Noh Hongchul was always the one we focused on, and Gil sidelined on entirely ignored.

I'm impressed by Gil's candidness and hid willingness to talk about Infinity Challenge directly. That's something that Hongchul needs to do if he is ever to have a chance of returning.

Thanks for the translation. :)
I have a soft spot for the 7 OG's and keep replaying the old episodes. I'm glad to read the Gil is in a place where he is genuinely happy.
I honestly keep hoping that he and NHC will miraculously come back on the show for a special of some sort, maybe 500th episode? (I know it isn't likely).... dreams are for free though. At least we get to see him on SMTM.
