Gil's Cameos
[ * * * ]
Kwanghee did good in the ep. He put in a shift doing the challenges and seemed enthusiastic throughout. You can tell he's slowly picking up on the show's eccentricities and getting more comfortable with the cast, all encouraging signs.

While on the topic about Kwanghee's debut as an official member, Gil and Jun Jin came into IC with much less fanfare and clamor, neither did they receive as much encouragement from the other members on-screen. Gil had a few cameos before appearing quite suddenly in the calender project, and Jun Jin was thrust into the deep end in the money bags special. In contrast, Kwanghee has to contend with greater pressure and scrutiny from netizens, but he joined IC at a better time with the other members more mature and more eager to see a new member succeed.

But I wonder, were Gil and Jun Jin anything more than a stopgap? Jun Jin was kind of a Haha replacement, and Gil came in seemingly because Jun Jin was going to the army. The other members were initially very dismissive(at least on-screen) of Gil staying in the long-run.

...

Even though this was a special for Kwanghee, I felt PMS was the MVP in this one. A great watch and can't wait for the next part. ^_^

It might also be because the members are more aware of the backlash that Kwang Hee is getting compared to Gil and Jun Jin. Both of those guys got time to join the show at a much slower pace (And was added into the show after much positive review from the Shinhwa Special and Pimple Break/Kim Yuna Special/Chunyang Special). In that sense, they had a lot less backlash to joining the show than Kwang Hee was getting thanks to the very public Sixthman Special (All the issues with Dong Min didn't help the cause as well).

It could be this difference which is the difference between how the members acted back then Vs now. Also they had much less of an age gap to the other members than Kwang Hee has at the moment.

To be honest, I think the dismissive nature was a attempt to create a solid character for Gil more than anything. Gil first real appearance on IC was being a "nuisance" on the Kim Yuna special, a character that was a direct development of his mischievous boy character on Come To Play (along with Lee Haneul).

I don't think Gil was ever considered "just" a temporary stop gap. I think the team wanted someone that could act folly to the rest of the members. That was how he was used in all his initial appearances, someone that did all the "wrong" things to balance out some of the conservativeness that the members were showing at this point. It was just a bonus that he also happened to help Hyung Don crawl out of his cave by being a similar aged partner to him.

Yeah I agree, PMS was the real star of this episode. He did all the right things and was constantly trying to get Kwang Hee involved in the action in some way. The old devil definitely showed a soft side to himself in this episode~

This is a good point. Why is the member introduction this time around requiring so much tip-toeing? Two members were added in the past without much ceremony.

The reason is partly to do with the circumstances, which Lordbordem already touched upon, and partly to do with Kwanghee himself. Gil and Jun Jin were essentially viewed as temporary replacements, at least initially, which meant less was at stake, and because they first appeared as guests in successful episodes, their subsequent 'extended stay' was easier to digest. The viewers had a chance to watch them in the proper IC environment, and knew that they wouldn't destroy the show.

This time round, we have a show that is even more established, and a show that has gone through two scandals and lost two of its members. And to top it all off, we have a new member - whose public persona isn't to everyone's taste, and who is loud and incapable of not intruding -, set to join on a permanent basis. The Sixth Man special was designed to ease us into accepting a new member, but, in reality, its format differed too much from that of regular episodes for us to be able to truly experience how the candidates would fit the program. It was a great special, but it didn't provide the old guest-to-member viewer adjustment process we've seen in the past. This time, it was a given that a new member would be added, and we couldn't judge the prospective members merits in an unbiased manner.

Park Myungsoo was amazing. They were all really admirable, but the way he stepped up as the big brother really stood out. It's not often that we see the members' humanity shine through their facade of comedy and antics. Ep. 426 and 427 have a bit of episode 300's warmth, despite its rather brutal pace. You can really see the members trying their best. You can see their care, their love and their dedication. They might not get everything right, but these people really deserve our support.
