Here is that extended Park Myung Soo interview I promised to do sometime last week. It's a good read~

Park Myung Soo Interview - Comedian, Entertainer, Singer and DJ

It took 2 or so years for this interview to finally occur. It was around Autumn of 2012, when he used to pop up on various MBC variety shows like a mole in whack-a-mole, we said we should arrange an interview when he won the MBC Entertainment Awards, Grand Award. He might have said it as a joke but he replied “I’ll see you when I win the grand award.” However he really did end up winning the grand award at the 2012 MBC Entertainment Awards. Our interview was delayed for various reasons but now I have finally met up with him. Comedian, Entertainer, Forever 2nd in Charge and DJ G-Park, he is Park Myung Soo. We met Park Myung Soo in an underground workshop in the basement of a store complex in Bangbaedong. This was the DJ G-Part, G-Park Family Music Studio, which he arranged for 5 months ago. The workshop is filled with DJ equipment and recording equipment. He says he comes by everyday to listen to music and work on his songs.

It was probably after he won the award of his dreams, the grand award. This was when Park Myung Soo, just your usual funny old man, began to seriously work towards his dreams of being involved with music. Thanks to the MBC Infinity Challenge, “Park Myung Soo’s How About This Special,” he began to learn how to DJ and produce his own songs. He even ended up expanding by gathering up some DJs that were already working in the clubs of Itaewon and young composers, giving them a place to work in his workshop. The writer also happened to run into him last Autumn, when he was performing in a club in Busan. The opening comment, “Ladies and Gentleman~,” was clearly from Park Myung Soo and while he wasn’t at his 100% best, it was clear that he was excited and having fun. Likewise with the 200 or so people that gathered at the club.

Park Myung Soo casually mentioned that “I’m going to try be the world’s greatest DJ.” I ended up bursting out in laughter but Park Myung Soo was serious. “It’s not like it’s impossible.” Park Myung Soo hasn’t changed a bit. It’s true, there is nothing wrong with what he said. Who can predict what he will be doing in 1 year, 3 years or even 5 years. 2 years ago, the 40 year old comedian received a grand award, describing it more as a “perfect attendance award.” Now 2 years on, that comedian is DJ G-Park, performing in Japan and Europe, who could have imagined it? Who really could have imagined that he would perform two 15 min performances as a DJ on “Yoo Hee Yeol’s Sketchbook,” or that in December 1st, he would produce a digital single where he produces, writes, composes and sings it as well?

-It seems like music takes up a significant part of Park Myung Soo’s life. How did you end up at this point?

▶I really like music. After a certain point, music ended up occupying 30~40% of my life. In Junior High, when is used to listen to Kim Bum Ryong’s “Wind Wind Wind,” I first got exposed to European dance music. I liked it so much that I started looking up all the songs. I really liked the sounds of the synthesizers. However back then I didn’t have opportunity to work with music. I ended up realising my other dream, of becoming a comedian and I also tried my hands at night club DJing. I used to play a lot of Korean pop songs back then and that got me wanting to make my own song. That was why I made songs like “Prince of the Sea.” During those days, I would learn the steps by watching over the composers as they made the songs and recorded them. Time passed and we are now at a point where you can create music with just a single computer. I had an interest in music, the working environment happened to become easier to approach and learn and I happened to get the chance to study for 6 months while working on “Park Myung Soo’s How About This,” on Infinity Challenge. I then ended up also doing DJ work and that’s how I got to this stage.

-You are extremely active as a DJ.

▶There isn’t a lot of representative DJs in our country. I got the opportunity to meet with a lot of musicians thanks to my status of being a celebrity DJ. However since this style of music is more European than Korean, it is quite hard to scratch a beat that matches their tastes. That’s why I’m working even harder and listening to a lot of music. I’m preparing to make music, not just for the Korean charts but for international charts as well. I want to become No 1 in the world. It will be difficult of course but it might be possible if I work hard right. I obviously won’t get to No 1 on my first try but I believe I will get good results later on. I don’t have a lot of time to be extremely active. Being active on TV makes me happy but I want to end my life fulfilling my dream of working in Music. I like how everything is right now

I also get the sense that you were extremely proactive in creating your workshop and working with DJ Charles.

▶DJ Charles was actually an MBC Comedian. He worked for around 2~3 years before working as a DJ. I happened to find out that he was working as a DJ so I contacted him first and started to learn about music from him. Unlike me, he is an actual proper DJ but being an ex-comedian, we also talk on the same wavelength. Before when I used to learn from others, they would just say “you’re doing well x2,” since I’m a celebrity and all that but this guy would correctly and honestly criticise me. He also taught me the key techniques required to get up on stage quickly. It’s not just techniques that he taught me, he also taught me how to bond with the crowd and how to make the crowd enjoy themselves even more. He’s like a senior and a teacher to me. The workshop was something I’ve been thinking about and I managed to arrange it recently. Isn’t it great?

-It seems like there is some correlation to being an entertainer and a DJ

▶That’s right. I like fun and exciting things. Likewise for music, I don’t want to do love songs, I want to do something that people will like and have fun with.

-You go by the name of Great Park, G.Park when you’re DJ

▶It’s fine when I say “Hello I’m Great Park” but it’s a bit embarrassing when others go “Oh, Great Park, G.Park.” When I go overseas and I get called that, I get goosebumps all over and it makes me go crazy. It still feels foreign. Just being called Park Myung Soo feels better and much more familiar. Still G.Park is at least better than Great Park, although they are both embarrassing. Some people even got confused and think it’s G.Pang. I don’t think G.Pangy (Sounds like Walking Cane) is bad as well

-I would imagine that you have a lot of supporters, given that you are revisiting your dreams during your midlife.

▶I’m thankful. I will work hard on TV in future but I want to create my own field of activity. What will I do when broadcasters stop using me, what will it be like if I do something I like and am good at. How great will it be if I could keep training my talents and skills, even better if I could get some income from it as well. That’s how I got to this point and it’s really fun at the moment. After you go past mid 40’s, people start to get quite lonely. You need to find some sort of energy in your life, whether that be following a dream or a hobby. I just happened to rediscover music. There are people that think DJs are just Night Club DJs. By working in this field, I could change that perception and they could end up seeing this field of work in a bit more of a positive light. That will then improve the lives of the people that work in this field. I also wish that other midlifers would each find a dream or something they love to pursue.

Composer Ice Breaker and Park Myung Soo / Photo By = Lee Dong Hoon photoguy@

Park Myung Soo is, of course, an entertainer. He debuted in 1993 as part of the 4th group of MBC official comedians. This year marks his 22nd year in the business. Next year Infinity Challenge, a program that is inextricably linked with him, will welcome in its 10th anniversary. He had “once dreamed of being a CEO, however he “has different plans now. Frivolous celebrities stay frivolous till the day they die, living life while having fun, that’s the biggest happiness in my life.” The model of his life is the original entertainer, the man that has been the MC for “National Song Talent Show Off” for 30 years, Entertainer/MC Song Hae. Park Myung Soo said that “I believe being able to show my face to the public week in, week out and mingling with them like Sir Song Hae is the happiest thing you could do.”

-You won the grand award in 2012. Did that have any effect on you?

▶There was nothing at all (While shaking his head). Nothing has changed, it’s all exactly the same.

-Next year will be the 10th anniversary of Infinity Challenge. How do you feel about it?

▶I’m not really interested in 10 years as a number to be honest. I just kept working and it’s now been 10 years, that’s how I think of it. However being able to be on “Infinity Challenge” for 10 years was hugely fortunate and I believe it is a gift from God. It has become a key part of my life and thanks to it, I’ve been able to do a variety of other different things. There is nothing more fortunate than this. Being this fortunate for 10 years is an absolutely amazing thing. But now that 10 years have passed on Infinity Challenge, it makes me think of how much time has passed. So what if it is the 10th anniversary, the moment we finish the 10th anniversary festivities for Infinity Challenge, we will immediately be thinking about “What are we going to do next week.”

-Noh Hong Chul has had to leave the show due to drink driving on the eve of the 10th anniversary. It makes sense that you might be in low spirits.

▶It is upsetting since he was a close colleague. It does hurt. Jae Suk would always tell the juniors to always be careful. However now that this has happened, it makes sense that he take responsibility for it since he did make a mistake. I just wish that it won’t be blow out of proportion. That also doesn’t mean it was an okay thing do, I just wish that he is given time to repent. It would be a problem if he repeats it but people can make mistakes can’t they? It’s true that Hong Chul’s absences leaves a huge gap but the remaining guys have no choice but to work hard and ensure that the gap is unnoticeable is possible. In that regard, the staff is putting a lot of thought into it and we too are also working hard on it in our own right. If he repents a lot and he wants to return then it would be nice for him to be accepted again.

-During a recent “Infinity Challenge” recording, you went up the 63 Building and cleaned its windows right?

▶They say it’s not dangerous but just the act of hanging off the edge is scary in itself. They say the suffering would be short and sweet, so I thought “why the hell not” and went for it. If you think about it, I had this to do this job because all the other members are scared of heights. Still this may just be window cleaning but it was really scary. That’s why I thought “I’ll just look straight ahead” and opened my eyes. However the windows on the 63 building are practically mirrors. The wide open skies reflected off the windows. It seemed like I was seamlessly hanging in mid air. To make matters worse, it was windy and it was shaking. I then closed my eyes, thought “sigh screw it,” and just hacked away at it. It was tough. What’s funny was that I forget all about being scared because it was tiring. When it was all over, I even walked around the edge of the 63 building.

-Yoo Jae Suk and Guest, Cha Seung Won went to the coal mines right. .

▶It seems like Cha Seung Won has some sort of connection with coal and briquettes. They went through a lot of suffering 1000m underground. The other guys also suffered for the whole day. It was fortunate that at least I got to finish in 4 hours. I teased them over the phone (Laugh)

-Yoo Jae Suk is an inseparable partner and a leader. I’m lead to think that he is very different to you.

▶We have different styles. Jae Suk really was born to be on TV. Of course not all of it is natural talent. Yoo Jae Suk puts in a lot of effort to be the Yoo Jae Suk we know. He has no interest in stuff I do like DJ and the like. Actually he might just not have the free time for it. As a joke I would tell Yoo Jae Suk that “I hand down to you with all my rights. Do what you want.” Yoo Jae Suk and Kim Teo Ho PD, in particular, puts a lot of thought into things. That is something I’m thankful for. I just trust and follow them since they are the ones constantly thinking about things. Sometimes I would propose my own ideas, since it’s important to propose greater and more interesting ideas.

-When I said I was meeting up with Park Myung Soo, someone asked me if “Park Myung Soo is actually kind in person.”

▶ I’m extremely kind. I believe that I’m kind (Laugh). If I wasn’t kind, how would I be on TV and make others laugh. It’s fine if you’re just acting it out briefly but people notice everything. You can’t be in showbiz for long if you’re a bad or evil person. It’s because they will reveal their true colors during an important moment. Of course I also have a lot of faults. I swear when the camera is off and in the past video of me swearing accidently leaked out. However I become level-headed during decisive moments. I try to not harm others. That’s why I think I’ve been able to get to this point without too many mistakes.

-With respect to your DJ activities, it seems like you get a lot of support from your wife.

▶My wife is extremely level-headed. There is no concessions just because I’m her husband. There is no “My husband is the funniest.” She observes me from an objective standpoint and provides me with advice. She provides me with a lot of encouragement in regards to my DJ work. She also happens to like that sort of music. She would also learn and she would sometimes come down to the workshop and try things out for herself. We have extremely similar tastes in that regard. She would even come to my DJ performances and just dance. Even when I tell her that she should stop and leave, she won’t really listen to me. (laugh)

- Maybe it’s because you’re active as a DJ but it seems like you are a lot more energetic now compared to previous years

▶That’s right. I need to enjoy myself like crazy. Once I used to dream of becoming a CEO like Yang Hyun Suk and Lee Soo Man. However I’ve changed my mind now. For Frivolous celebrities, having fun and being a player till the day they day is their biggest happiness. Earning a lot of money isn’t the most important factor. As a celebrity, as a player, being able to stand on stage even if I’m just an hour away from death, is the happiest thing in the world. Being able to show my face to the public week in, week out and mingle with them like Sir Song Hae is what true happiness is. Whether that be on Infinity Challenge, another program, in a club where I play music as a DJ. Being able to be on a stage where I can bond with people is the most important thing. That’s what happiness is and that’s the true answer to life.

-What is your dream for 2015, as a DJ and as an Entertainer?

▶I’m working hard as a DJ so I can have one of my songs placed in foreign markets and music charts. I think I might be a famous DJ in around 3 years time. The colleagues that I work with are all working very hard as well. By working with people in their 20’s, It feels like my way of thought is also of a 20’s year old. I’m always discovering and finding out new things. Next year, my daughter Min Seo starts school. I become a parent of a school child. It’s also Infinity Challenge’s 10th anniversary. It’s not just about working hard now, it’s about putting in the extra effort from now on. It does hurt a bit to celebrate the 10th anniversary with just this group. I don’t know what the future direction will be but I will work hard and do my best. If a lot of viewers desire it then I want to keep working hard till the very end.
