A very ambitious concept with the $1k start-up fund (plus the amount they earned from the first War of Money) and filming right till midnight for this special. There were many instances where the members did not show good business sense in their dealings, but perhaps, showcasing good business practices was not the key point that the PDs wanted to convey. The main message I got out of viewing the two episodes was that running a profitable business is hard work. We see the members slogging it out trying to earn money. We see their struggles, that painful sense of regret when they realise they could have made a better decision in conducting and planning their business, to the disappointment when profits are not coming in the way they envisioned. ------ From the little that was shown for NHC's part, he's doing the same thing as the last War except now he has more inventory. It seems like he identified perishable small items that would be affordable, desirable and could be easily sold without needing any equipment. It also looked like he put in quite a bit of effort to create his own fragrance bottles. His TV personality status further enhanced his already excellent salesmanship. I wished we could have seen more of what he done, but understandably because of the circumstances, he really got his screen time cut out in what hopefully is not his final contribution in IC. NHC did so well that we can catch a glimpse of him helping JS clear his stock of cabbages in a short clip towards the end of the ep. Ultimately, I feel that most of the mistakes that the members made could have been prevented if they had planned out their business more thoroughly with guidance from an expert. An even more ambitious War of Money 3 is in the works, the PDs will probably be very serious about getting the members coached in business principles because giving 10k capital to each member to start a business is really not a joke. |

To be honest, I expected both Jung Jun Ha and Park Myung Soo to do better than they did. I'm not sure why they picked such low margin businesses. Jun Ha was definitely guilty of thinking of an idea first then trying to figure out how to monetize it. The concept of rotating concepts throughout the day was interesting but food stuff are always low margin-high throughput. It was always going to be very difficult selling enough items to make even a semblance of a decent profit, especially when he had just two employees. The Nail Cafe was even weirder. It's an item that takes a lot of time per customer, when time is something that they didn't really have (Especially Jun Ha since he had to prep for his night business). He ended up having to spend more money to hire more workers but he didn't get enough customers to offset that cost. His night business might have been better but it seemed misguided. It feels like an item that would have worked better at lunch time than at night. Most people at that time would rather go home/go get a proper dinner rather than a small snack. He also made the mistake of incorrectly guessing his stock levels and ordered way too much inventory. He might have sold it all if he had more workers but whether he would have made the labour costs back is debatable. Myung Soo just didn't seem very interested in the whole endeavor and his choice of business showed that. He picked something with the shortest lead time and least amount of effort, then proceeded to be sick all episode and in hospital getting an IV drop. Not much can be said about him to be honest (Besides saying that he should have just stayed at MBC Headquarters) Jae Suk...eh Jae Suk....the less said about his business acumen the better. He just wasn't born to be in business. It was clear that his ulterior motive was to "help" your average farmer. He's always thinking about some sort of hidden message or trying to find ways to highlight the plight of the normal person. It's not as obvious in other specials but it's just plainly obvious here and it's just not very interesting. I really wish Jae Suk would have focused on actually earning money rather than supporting a cause. Hyung Don only managed to sell because of his face. Obviously the same applies to the others for the most extent but it was especially plain for JHD's case. Slogan bottles aren't necessarily interesting nor are they unique enough to be charging $12ish off the side of a street. At least he tried to sell them without using his celebrity status, which I commend him for. Haha's idea was interesting but same issue with Jun Ha, low margin and high throughput. Even worse because each session takes at minimum 30 mins and he only had one cart available since he was lugging around his drinks in the 2nd cart. The sausage party was an idea that exploited his celebrity status and not really worth discussing. Noh Hong Chul....the clear business leader here. Custom fragrances, selling flower bundles at the same time, selling snacks etc. He constantly changed his items to suit his needs and also made sure to sell them at extremely good margins (double margins in most cases). It would have been nice to see what he did in the 2nd half just to see how he managed to double his profits from the noon to the end. As for a potential War Of Money 3 with the $10,000 they were given. I don't think it's going to really happen. I think it's more of a sly TEO PD style joke more than anything. I would be really surprised if they actually went ahead with that idea. I sort of feel like this idea has reached its limits. From what we've seen from both 1 and 2, it's clear to see what a potential 3rd edition might be (Jun Ha, Haha does somewhat well, Hyung Don and Hong Chul lead, Myung Soo goes for easy, Jae Suk just needs to stay away from it all). I just don't think a 3rd edition would have anything interesting and new to offer that we haven't already seen yet |
