My thoughts on this episode were initially posted elsewhere on this site, but since I found this thread I'll move it here. I haven't seen p1 or p2 of the What If sp however and have only read reviews of how the episodes went. Episode 365 consisted of two major segments: 1) the ending of Hongchul and Yoon Ju's We Got Married and 2) What if PMS was the best mc. 1) The housewarming party held for IC members by Hongchul and Yoon Ju were probably the best part of this episode. The guys looked like they were seriously having a lot of fun and Hongchul and Yoon Ju really seemed like a couple. I found the kissing part to be absolutely hilarious and even rewinded a few times, but suddenly I wondered what (Korean) viewers thought when they saw males pecking each other on the lips. I don't take stuff like that seriously and found everything funny, but there are also people out there who are grossed out by such things even when it's supposed to be a joke. 2) The What If PMS was the nation's best mc was funny and idiotic at the same time. It was weird and hard to get used to, but after a while it was okay. Introducing PMS as the best mc and the interviews to establish setting took a while, but imo it was the best bits of the segment because of how the members esp YJS & JJH kept breaking down. The most boring part of this episode was PMS as mc when they tried to experience the South Pole in the freezing warehouse. Aside from the fact that PMS was not that great as a mc (nothing surprising), I could actually feel how awkward everyone else was and how most of the members were holding back because they didn't want to step on PMS's authority/illusion of PMS as best mc. YJS seemed to not know what to do as a regular member and didn't contribute much. Thus, there were a lot of unfunny moments. The funnier moments were when they discarded the What If illusion for a second and messed with PMS esp HaHa. PMS as an mc seemed to be more intent on talking to the camera and than interacting with the cast or at least allowing them to interact thus rendering most of the members useless and making them boring. Or otherwise, there were just not enough adlibs in this segment. In short, I'm really glad PMS does not mc IC. Of course, he also mentioned something similar at the end. The last tug-of-war game on the towers only partially made me laugh because of how horrible the idea in reality really was but was still brilliant and silly (as satire). I kind of hoped the IC members would loosen up and act crazy on the towers (improvise), but it seemed they were more content to follow the script of dying, which I guess was good enough for me anyway. The reason this segment was so powerful was because of PMS's closing statement though; they really do put their lives on the line just so viewers could laugh. Comedy is now evolving that painful/embarrassing punishments or games (for instance performing stuff in the cold) is the standard. It'd be horrible if such a high risking game of tug-of-war on towers could become reality some day, even if not to that extreme. We as viewers really do keep asking for more and more, for bigger and better. It's like asking viewers to really think about the trouble comedians go through and what more do they want, for the comedians to actually die? My final thoughts on this episode: IC members watched the segments and laughed, joked, and commented on what they saw. I didn't see the earlier episodes, but in this one I thought YJS looked tired. I didn't see the MBC 2013 entertainment awards but I saw the episode where Hongchul and JJH lost weight for the modeling pictures. During the interviews for PMS's segment JJH who lost weight looked atrocious i.e. tired and unhealthy. He might be gaining back some weight and I hope he does. I hope IC members take care of their health above anything else. |

Luckily(?) Jung Jun Ha got a whole bunch of new nicknames thanks to new found weight, like Variety Show Zombie, Jung Jun Ha-rabogi (Jung Jun Grandfather), Ancestor, The man that shook the world through dieting, Funeral Photo Jun Ha, The Creation Myth of The Dieting World etc. At least in the Yut Game special, he does appear to have regained some of his weight and looks a lot better now. Noh Hong Chul is pretty much back to normal (I think they mentioned he has already regained 10kg or so). Surprisingly, no one seemed to take the kissing thing too seriously. Pretty much everyone I saw on the Korean sites thought it was funny, especially Myung Soo and Dal Myung. The viewers have known the staff for so long that little jokes like this don't seem to faze us much This episode was great just for a quick and simple laugh. Part 1 and Part 2 were a bit more interesting but as a whole they probably ended up picking the 2 least interesting panels on the spin wheel. It was still fun to watch Yoo Jae Suk being such a massive prat in both Gil's fantasy and Hong Chul's fantasy so that made up for some of it. In regards to Park Myung Soo's section, I think the whole thing was meant to be satirical. That whole part where Jae Young Jae PD visits Park Myung Soo about a new program idea and it's about little cousins following their aunts and uncles on a trip that's 1 Night and 2 Days long. Then the whole section is about getting really big guests and how they won't come out unless PMS is involved etc before PMS tells him off saying that he needs to make more unique ideas. It's an obvious stab at a whole bunch of KBS programs that have recently been started as a bandwagon effort. Shows like Superman (Similar to Daddy!) and Mama Island (Similar To Grandpa Over Flowers) seem to be the main target here but I guess it applies for pretty much every show created in recent years. Then there is the obvious safety issues you have already mentioned. Making sure they uphold promises at the expense of their own safety etc. In some ways I think the segment was trying a bit too hard to try and convey a message. I also assume it was Park Myung Soo's idea because TEO PD definitely isn't THIS obvious with his social commentary. Still it was a fun episode to watch just to see Yoo Jae Suk pretending to be Park Myung Soo and the editing for the episode was impeccable. Just amazed how well they integrated the award ceremony into the general plot. The interviews were great as well, Yoo Jae Suk talking about how Park Myung Soo was the national MC because he wasn't greedy about money and setting up new businesses. Then you got the after party scene where Park Myung Soo was telling off Yoo Jae Suk(Currently playing the role of Myung Soo) for not focusing on his work and being obsessed about music and dancing. Then talking about how Yoo Jae Suk shouldn't go to so many events and to cut down on the amount of DJ jobs he takes before Haha exposes that Jae Suk was caught DJing at a cheap bar somewhere. Then Gil mentioning that Yoo Jae Suk wore a competitor's brand of clothing to another clothing company's event. Seriously the whole episode was just an excuse to tease Park Myung Soo~ Edited by lordbordem, Feb 3 2014, 05:54 PM.

So, yet again, I was re-watching many IC episodes including this. It just hit me that during the what if special, there were 4 things that were chosen instead of 2 (2 from JHD and 2 from PMS), but they only did the WGM parody and PMS's Nation MC thing (and also PMS being dead in a way). They never did try out the debut thing from JHD's suggestion, and i'm wondering why I thought it was a pretty neat idea xD

That was because Hyung Don and Myung Soo both had to pick from one of the two once their panel was decided, so they decided on the marriage and national MC what ifs. They obviously picked the marriage one to troll Hong Chul and Gil while Myung Soo was always going to choose national MC vs "What if I died." Would have been nice if they did all 4 but frankly, I think the 2 chosen ones were the best amongst the four (The debut program one would have been a bit dull since half the crew would have been skits while 2 wouldn't have a program per se) |
