Here is a really old article that talks about Yoo Jae Suk’s first small rise from 7 years from obscurity. It’s the starting point of his career in a way and details some previously unknown stories about what changed his mind set.

An end to 7 years of unemployment by playing the role of an unemployed guy
KBS 2 TV's "Everything About Comedy" Comedian Yoo Jae Suk

Wandered from minor role to minor role since his debut in 1991. Those were the days when he was dispirited because he had to work amongst his more popular colleagues. One of the characteristics that a star must have is confidence, a realisation he gained during his days in national service. After this he tried his best even on minor roles. YJS: "Once I believed that I could be funny, It really did happen."

Do you know who comedian Yoo Jae Suk (Aged 25) is? A pitiful husband that survives thanks to his wife. He is a comedian is gaining in popularity thanks to his so called "Unemployed Man" role. He is a belated rising star that has broken free from his years of obscurity due to his modern day representation of an unemployed husband.

KBS 2TV "Everything About Comedy's" "My husband has nerves" corner is the program that has allowed him to finally end his 7 years of obscurity. The curious contrast between his actor-like clean appearance with an air of intelligence and the fact that he is a pitiful unemployed husband has been the source of great laughs.

YJS: "I haven't gotten married yet but in a way there is a lot of similarities between my life till now and the life of an unemployed husband. During national holidays i would also avoid going to my relative's house and would avoiding meeting friends as well. In a way it's a small role and i try my best but everyone i meet asks me 'what are you doing lately.'"

He debuted in 1991. It was during his 1st year at the Seoul Art's University Television Role Course, he debuted as the part of the 7th group of KBS comedians. His colleagues include Kim Kook Jin, Kim Yong Man, Park Soo Hong etc. Compared to his colleagues who became quickly successful, YJS would just wander from minor role to minor role till he got conscripted into national service at the end of 1994. His minor roles included items such as "Guard" "Passerby" etc.

YJS: "My biggest problem was that i lacked confidence. Around a year after i debuted i got my chance. My Colleague Kim Yong Man would play the role of a politician and i would play the role of his secretary. I was even promised a bigger role if i played this role well."

However due to his nervousness, he ended up making 4 NGs (No Goods) and the PD no longer contacted him. He would get conscripted into national service while his colleagues were getting scouted to appear on other broadcasting channels.

YJS: "Actor Lee Jung Jae entered national service on the same day as me and so i constantly kept by his side. He was a really good friend, completely different to the prejudices i had about him. But i suffered from the stresses of being an unknown rookie right from the first day."

Watching the senior offices asking Lee Jung Jae for dozens of autographs was not a happy sight. He purposely avoided watching TV Comedy Programs as well. It was because he didn't have the peace of mind to do so. Instead he learned through Lee Jung Jae that he needed to have confidence to become a star. After leaving national service he carefully went knocking at the doors of the broadcasters. He started with minor roles but it was different compared to before.

YJS: "I vowed to myself that i would not turn myself into garbage. I hypnotised myself into thinking that everyone was going to laugh after seeing my acting and that really did happen after this."

His actor like-appearance and wily comedic acting has started to garner a response from viewers. Yoo Jae Suk appears on KBS 2TV's "The day you laugh is a good day" "Wake Up Sun Hee" as an anti-feminist guy and as unemployed guy that lives off his wife on "Everything about Comedy" He realised that everyone gets a fair chance.

Lately there is a lot of people on the street that say "He's that unemployed husband." He is currently realising that getting autograph requests from female students and getting CF requests is something that only others can do. Right now he is the protagonist of a happy unemployed man story.
