omg I would loooooooove for this ep and the next one to be subbed.
There's a lot of Korean history and the teachers n the members are telling it in a very interesting way (instead of boring classroom style).

I find it hilarious that Secret participated in this special only to have Hyosung's scandal come out at the same time. It speaks to the somewhat lip service-y effect of educational TV shows. I certainly hope it has affected viewers to care more about history than how it has affected her.

You can't change people overnight and historical/political topics are not usually something that interests most people in my/our age group (Mid 20's). Hell even i had to do some research about the implications of her statement because it sure as hell didn't really seem like a big enough issue until i delved into it from a South Korea perspective.

Frankly i don't think a lot of SK people in my age group realise a lot of the implications as well unless they are specifically from that geopolitical area that was most affected by this during the 80's (Hello~ Gwangju and other liberal seats~)

Yeah I understand. I'm not saying that all Korean youth need to be 100% aware of historical events but I find it mostly ironic and funny that her scandal came out at the same time as a special of this nature. Is 민주화시키다 well-known for its association with Ilbe users? Even if you didn't know what happened in Gwangju, I think the thought of Hyosung visiting Ilbe alone is enough to turn people off. Furthermore, for someone of her age, it's not a stretch to assume they'll be able to tell if the term 'democratize' (with the original 하다 form) has been bastardized right?

Whatever the case, the bad press generated might stir more to care about politics and history. I wonder if IC will decide to edit her out.

Yeah it's definitely quite face palm worthy. As for whether the whole term is common amongst the ilbe boards and the DC Gallery's new posts section. Frankly i'm not too sure, i haven't delved too deeply into the forum environments in Korea less i loss my sanity so i might wait for things to die down a bit first before trying to figure that out because right now you would think all of them were facists or something 0.o.

And someone of her age being able to tell? Well if that news report that spurred this episode was anything to go by (Senior high school kids not knowing what March 1st is or if the Yasukuni Shrine is a gentlemen, shrine = same word as gentleman in Korean "Shinsa"), lets just say my confidence isn't too high on that.

Yes it will be very interesting to see if she is cut out or not. Probably will be.

Snap, I totally forgot about the 삼일절 news that they brought up. That was really shocking to me because even as a non-native speaker, I learnt about it in my Korean class so I thought it was common knowledge.

I read a Koreabang article about Ilbe (and other online communities) before. I completely understand your avoidance, lol.

Episode 329 - Subtitle Research Information

This is where we will post all our research notes and any particular points that need to be specifically mentioned.

Most of these notes will be in chronologically order in terms of where they appeared during the episode.

-Danjae Shin Chae Ho was a Korean independence activist, historian and nationalist during the Imperial Japanese rule in the early 19th century.
He is famous of his quote "A Nation deprived of history does not have a future" where he signifies the importance of history in terms of country's specific identity.
His pen name is Danjae (丹齋) and the individual meaning would Dan - Red and Jae - Purification.
The red is symbolic of left-wing politics to which Shin Chae Ho also leaned towards and while purification symbolises the notion that he was pure of mind and spirit.
So the meaning of Danjae can be explained as long the lines of "He has a heart of red towards the people and was a person of pure mind and spirit that did not sway to pressure."

-The Shinto Shrine Controversy involves the issue relating to high rating Japanese Officials paying visits to the Yasukuni Shrine, which is a war memorial for Japanese war heroes covering everything from the Boshin War to World War 2.
The issue being that some of the individuals being honoured in the shrines are technically war criminals in most of the neighbouring nations and the annual war remembrance events causes a lot of heated controversy in the numerous neighbouring countries

-The survey that is being discussed through this section is a MBC News segment where the reporters went around asking students about historical events and questions.
