Discuss Episode 316 - Number Baseball

Posted Image

▪ Infinity Challenge Episode 316 <Number Baseball> ▪
Do you remember “Number Baseball?”
The game that made you eagerly await the next break during school.
Let’s head off and play some nostalgic games~ Go~ Go~

# The man with the bat(?)
Nostalgia trip~ “Number Baseball”
The members, excluding Gil who has had to miss this due to personal reasons, are split up into two teams
They may be lacking a bit in the stamina and spirit but they will clinch victory with the experience they've gained through old age.
The nitpicking mother in law Jae Suk and the duo that has been reborn as Happy and Cheerful, Ha & Soo.
Old Boy Team – Jae Suk, Myung Soo and Jun Ha!

Rapid body movements! Quick thinking and young blooded. They have joined up!
Young Boy Team – Hyung Don, Hong Chul and Haha!

Pick 4 numbers from 0~9
The 2 teams decide on their 4 character long password for their safe!
Hide it well or else they’ll see your safe~
They have hidden their opposing team’s safe somewhere deep within the broadcasting studio building
They need to find the safe and guess the password!

They need to snatch the ball attached to the opposing team’s bottom so that they are given the chance to guess their password.

If they guess one of the numbers out of the 4 letter password then it is <Ball 1>
If they guess the number and the position it’s in then it is <Strike 1>
If the number and position are both wrong then they are <Out>

# Old Boys VS. Young Boys’ Big Battle!
The editing rooms, Comedian’s office, Clothing Room, Underground Car park, the gym and of course the Infinity Challenge meeting room as well. They go all over to find the safe. The OB team searches the inside of the studio with a fine toothed comb. They will need to be wrong a thousand times to guess the opposition team’s password. YB Team decides to attack first and just shout out any old number!

Hong Chul releases his powerful craziness; Hyung Don is the master of instinctive investigation! Throws out a lot of decisive hints! The person that will decide who will win is Myung Soo? Following on from “Joker Park” he will now rewrite the history of “Team Killing!”

In this tense stalemate situation with none of the teams giving an inch away, the OB Team and YB Team engage in a battle of brains and brawns with their prides at stake. Who will be the one that gifts them with victory

WARNING. Some spoilers of the episode are written below.

I love today's episode. The concept was very interesting & well executed. The thrills & suspense put me on the edge of my seat even though they were just running around in the building hitting each other's butts with a baseball bat for hints. My favorite part of the episode was when Park Myung Soo's said he didn't knew the password near the end of the episode. That was variety gold. Overall, I think this episode was better than last week's vampire hunter special.

Btw, what did the OB team win & why wasn't Gil present during the recording?

The OB team won the ability to pick first (Not obvious during the episode but it's clear with the preview that they get to pick their first person next week.)

Gil is away due to a concert in the US.

Yeah this week was a great episode, i actually loved the point when JHD uses some great logic to figure out the password. That was pretty fun to watch as a puzzle lover and that little sleight of hand by PMS was funny =D

Rules of the game for Episode 316 (Number Baseball)

The preview wasn't as clear as it should be because we didn't quite understand the context but we've now watched the episode and we can explain the rules properly

-The goal of the game is the guess the opposing team's password and open their safe

-They are split into teams

-They each need to make a 4 character long password
-However it needs to be comprised of numbers from 0-9 and the numbers cannot repeat within the password (E.g 0981 is fine but 0991 is not)
-This number is then used to set the password on a safe
-The safe is then hidden somewhere along with extra balls. This is called the base.

-They each attach a ball to their bottom and carry a bat
-If you manage to dislodge the ball from a opposing team member's bottom then you get a chance to guess their password.
-If they lose a ball then they need to go back to base and get a new ball.

-There is several rules regarding password guesses
-If your guess contains a number that is in their password then the opposing team needs to tell you "1 Ball" (E.g if their password is 0891 and you guess 8721 then it's 1 ball and if you guess 8923 then it's 2 ball etc)
-If your guess contains a number that is in their password AND it's also in the same position then they tell you "1 Strike" (E.g. if their password is 0891 and you guess 0238 then it's 1 strike and 1 ball etc)
-If you guess their password correctly then it's "Out"
-(IC Only Rules) If you have guessed their password correctly, then the next time you dislodge a ball, then you can ask them whether the safe is below or above a certain floor.

-During all of this each team needs to find their opposing team's safe.
-If they find the safe then the game is halted and the opposing team is called up to their safe.
-They then have to tell the finder a number from their password along with it's position
-The team then has to go hide the safe again along with the extra balls.

-The first team to figure out the password, find the safe and open it wins

Another great episode.
What frustrated me was that some people thought IC copied Running Man.
Lol, Running Man is an inspiration from one of IC's many different concepts!
In my opinion IC clearly does it better. Let me rephrase that. Kim Tae Ho does it better. Sometimes Running Man's captions sound cheesy. IC, however has brilliant captions throughout the whole episode. The three way call between Yoo Jae Suk, Park Myung Soo, and Jung Jun Ha was so funny! I doubt any other PD would have used that scene but Kim Hae Ho made that scene into pure gold! Genius!

As much as I enjoy Running Man, the arrogance from RM's international fans makes me want to not wathc RM anymore. I read an article in Allkpop where Koreans picked IC as their favorite tv show in but all the comments in the comment sections were "I can't believe RM isn't on top" or "IC? I forgot this show existed." and so on. RM is only more popular internationally because subtitles are easier to obtain and idols appear more frequently than IC. Besides, the root of RM is IC so have some respect!

Sorry for the tantrum but it frustrates me how underestimated IC is by the international community... RM is a decent show but it's only an offspring of a greater parent. Even the producers of RM admitted it. Heck, many of the writers in RM previously worked for IC! IC is amazing! Watch it folks!

lol take it from someone that has gone through that for a few years, the quicker you let that kind of thing slide the easier it is for you. =)

There really is no competition right now between IC and RM in terms of international fan bases and we could discuss reasons all day long but at the end of the day IC doesn't appeal to people internationally given how Korean-centric the whole show is.

Lets not forget this is AKP we're talking about here as well, when has anything productive, smart, funny or in any way worthwhile come out of the comments section of AKP or any other really large general site? Hell just look at the youtube comments (Actually don't do that, i rather not impart mental torture on people)

I take comfort in knowing at the end of the day that no matter what happens overseas, the shows future will be decided in Korea and IC is definitely in a stronger position than RM is. Not to mention YJS and Haha wouldn't dwell too long on the fact that RM is cancelled whereas YJS has already stated in EP300 that his life as an entertainer would most likely end with IC, you can't get any more significant than that~

Words of wisdom from Lord Bordem...

"the shows future will be decided in Korea and IC is definitely in a stronger position than RM is"

I really wish IC will air forever but there are some factors in Korea that may effect the lifespan of IC. IC is an MBC program and we all know who the head of MBC is... Kim Tae Ho often makes some statements through the captions that may or may not bother some folks in political territory. Knowing how people like Kim Jae Dong and Yoon Do Hyun got kicked out from KBS because of their favoritism towards left-wing, this worries me... If IC's view rating was +20% like in the past, I wouldn't even worry about this. The content of IC is still good but the viewer rating doesn't seem to sky rocket like before... Kim Jae Chul may cancel IC just like he did with Come to Play... I know this is a whole different topic and we were talking about RM international fans before but I can't get this concern out of my head. I'm really hoping the new female president will punish Kim Jae Chul as she promised during in election but I have doubts.

Anyways, back to the topic. I still think RM is only popular internationally because of idol guests. X-men was also popular internationally because of idol guests, FO was popular because of Daesung and idol guests, Strong Heart is popular because... Once again, idols. Knowing that so many teenage idol fans will watch whatever show their precious oppa were in, I believe this is the reason why RM became super popular. If no idol guests appeared on the show, there wouldn't have been fans subbing the show. Then, the international community wouldn't have known about RM just like IC.

Personally, I'm glad MC Yoo and Haha are popular overseas. They deserve it. But I'm also glad IC rarely invites idols to the show because there are so many shows in Korea that invites idol guests or has an idol as supporting MC. Glad IC is staying away from that path, even if that means less international attention.

Muhan Dojeon Fighting! You don't need idols! The seven of you are better than any idols out there!

I think it's better to look at IC in relative terms rather than outright ratings. It's true the IC is rating a lot lower than it used to and in the grand scheme of things is actually plateauing/on a slight down curve but if you look at Saturday as a whole you will see that every single time slot on Saturday has been on a massive down for the last couple years.

We no longer have dramas pushing 30%+ on a Saturday anymore and even on Sundays rating have stagnated and fluctuate between 10~20% at most. It's just inevitable, VOD, DMB, Internet broadcasts are on the rise and none of the rating houses take them into account. Rough guesses if we include those items would place IC just above 20% just by looking at download counts for IC episodes on most Korean web hards and torrent sites.

IC is also the highest rating show right now in terms of viewer immersion and loyalty, both of which factor into PPL costs and advertising purchase power. Even during the strikes on re-runs, IC's ad blocks were constantly being sold out and when the shows airing normally the ad slots tend to garner a massive premium if old reports are anything to go by.

Then you have stuff like merchandise, branding, general public opinion and it's clear that IC is untouchable until it's ratings absolutely tanks (We're talking below 10% here)

So while Jae Chul might hate the show, there is no way he can touch it. He would be putting a MASSIVE hole in MBC's bottom end if he was to touch the show in anyway. In his position IC is a necessary evil to give him enough power to do what he wants elsewhere in the broadcasting company.

Hopefully we'll see him out by the middle of this year but i'm not too hopeful and even when he's out the next president will be chosen by the same party that put Jae Chul into MBC in the first place. MBC is already haemorrhaging talent as we speak (They lost Announcer Choi Il Go just 2 days ago and that was a MASSIVE loss) so the damage might already be done. Getting rid of him at this point is a matter of damage control more than anything unfortunately.

And yeah it's true that idols played a big part in the success of X-men but i think that influence was a lot less in terms of FO and RM. Certainly people started watching FO because of Daesung but they eventually stayed for the interactions between the members (If we were to just credit idols than FO2 with Yoona, Taekyun etc should have done ALOT better). RM was just a continuation of FO's successes.

Hell iSub's initial members were just carry overs from the Ramensoupsub forums and a lot of people moved over because of Yoo Jae Suk more than anything. It's just a shame that most people think RM is YJS's biggest priority but you know fans can be rather biased at times =)

Anecdotally, our most popular subtitle is currently the Gangs of Seoul special with Big Bang. It's not a massive difference between 1st and 2nd place but it's a clear difference.

Very true Lord Bordem

As a once devoted idol fan myself (I liked SNSD. Don't judge me!!!) I know I didn't enjoy every single show that SNSD were in. The ones that I liked though had good interaction between the Main MCs and guests. MC Yoo is very good at making guests seem funnier. He can make the shyest celeb into a funniest person (Jo Jung Chi and Kim C in Ugly festival). That's why International fans love any shows where their favorite idols are with MC Yoo. As a matter of fact, I became a fan of SNSD because of IC. the 2009 song festival with Jessica really got me interested in SNSD. Now I realized maybe it was MC Yoo who made me like SNSD in the first place.

Because of this, RM is popular. It has idols and MC Yoo is really good at making anyone interesting. Well, at least that's my new theory. I mean I certainly started liking Daesung too because of his interaction with Yoo Jae Suk in FO. That is another reason why MC Yoo is liked by international community. He can make anyone around him shine.

Idol + MC Yoo = love from international community

Unfortunately YJS isn't infallible. The IC SNSD special "What women want" was a dark period in our history and one we must never forget! But then i guess PMS was the MC for the episode so i guess it's his fault and not YJS~

YJS is really good at devaluing himself to make people around him look better, Kang Ho Dong is really good at making himself stand out extremely so that the people around him benefit from it as well. Shin Dong Yeop is awesome at making naughty jokes and being that cheeky child character that variety shows should have more of =)

I always thought Shin Dong Yeop would have been a better fit for overseas fans compared to a more timid YJS or passive aggressive KHD

LOL, the 'What women want' episode. I never thought that episode was terrible but then again, I barely remember that episode. And I didn't really know who SNSD was, or even cared about them until 2009 song festival.

My parents don't really like Kang Ho Dong and I'm not a huge fan either but Kang Ho Dong is a good entertainer nonetheless. I thought he was funny in 1 Night 2 Days but then again, I watched the show because Lee Soo Geun, and MC Mong was funny.

Shin Dong Yeop is amazing because he has a very unique character and not too many Korean celebs have a character that is unique (Only other person I can think of is Hong Suk Cheon but that's because he's the only gay celeb in Korea). Only Shin Dong Yeop can do the 19+ comedy on a TV show intended for everyone. He's so good at it! Shin Dong Yeop in SNL Korea, pure gold!!!!

I also wonder why Shin isn't so popular internationally. I also wonder why Tak Jae Hoon isn't so popular either, but I'm guessing it's because he doesn't host that many shows these days. There is also Kim Kyung Kyu too but I think he's too old to attract international fans.

Shin Dong Yeop when he first appeared on SNL was just amazing. That was such a good episode and it's good to see him let loose on his naughty side =D

Hong Suk Cheon is slowly starting to come back out again, which is great, and his appearance on Radio Star has done a lot to improve his image. I guess some might hate him for using his homosexuality as a joke and perhaps devaluing it's importance but what can you do? It's not like you can have a serious discussion about it in Korea right now (Although his appearance on Healing Camp was a good first step)

Lee Kyung Kyu is too old and he rarely does anything with idols these days so it's somewhat expected that he's pretty invisible overseas. Likewise for Tak Jae Hoon, he lost a lot of momentum with the issues that Shin Jung Hwan had.

As a side note, i still think that Shin Jung Hwan was a genius in variety shows. Unfortunately geniuses tend to have some crippling negatives in any other areas =(

What an intense and hilarious episode! Nobody can do twists at the end like IC does it. This episode was very Myungsoo-centric which means I automatically love it XD Standout moments for me:
-Myungsoo saying he's a composer who's written 6 songs and Junha countering him saying he can finish a bowl of Jjajangmyun in 5 seconds
-Jaesuk's 깜~~~짝 놀랐다
-Hyungdon's scarily accurate guess
-Myungsoo's endless stuttering of coffeeshop
-Jaesuk holding up even when outnumbered 2 to 1
-the twist at the end

I really thought it wasn't going to be interesting since the game was essentially guessing passwords. Makes up for the unexpectedly boring vampire special.

Agreed about Shin Dongyeob. I got to know him from the health science show (Discovery of something) he did with Super Junior so I always knew he was good but I didn't pay attention to him since he didn't do any big shows at that time. Is Shin Junghwan just laying low these days?

Yeah Shin Jung Hwan is just laying low and keeping to himself while healing his messed up leg. He did do a short interview a while back but nothing much came from it.

However at least he has been spotted recently, i don't think there has been a single squeak about MC Mong for like a year or more. Really wonder what he is doing and if he's ever going to return.

It's funny, you can supposedly cheat taxes and return, you can have a massive sex scandal and return, you can get kicked out of a major idol group for doing something shifty and return yet if you even hint at the possibility that you might have tried to skip out of national service, it's like you murdered the president, killed their family and then went out and killed a bunch of harmless puppies while saying Dokdo is Japanese territory. It seems so disproportional compared to everything else

@lordbordem

What happened to Shin Jung Hwan was sad indeed. I really liked his comedy style. In fact, I liked Shin Jung Hwan since Country KkoKko. But what he did was wrong and he shouldn't really be on TV anymore.

As of Hong Suk Cheon, huge respect to him. I watched Healing Camp too and he went through a lot. He's like Martin Luther King Jr for Korean homosexuals! Good for him. I don't understand homosexuality but they shouldn't be discriminated. For that, I support Hong Suk Cheon's fight for Homosexual rights.

@figarofigaro
I would like to add the end where members don't bother to read Gil's letter and throw it away. That was so mean but so funny!

Shin Jung Hwan, didn't he move to a different country? I know he's not arrested. I think he's laying low like that pedophile guy (can't remember his name).
